I’ve just discovered that there are actual law textbooks regarding the legalities of fan fiction and other fan works… This sounds hilarious. If they are anything like the journal article I’m reading right now, the impersonal way of describing different types and terminology would be worth a laugh

…is fanfiction illegal?

Technically yes, because you are taking pre-existing characters or story lines (which are copyrighted) and altering or rewriting them.

But it is also a bit of a grey area because it’s not like anyone really makes money from it or takes money away from the copyright holder so terms like ‘fair use’ get thrown around

I love how book lovers reward themselves with finishing a book by buying more books.

Sometimes we don’t even finish before buying more. We tend to congratulate our selves for buying books by buying more books.

According to a 2008 NY Times article, psychologists in Britain and the U.S. reported a number of people experiencing “Truman Syndrome” or “The Truman Show delusion” - the belief that they are the unwitting star of their own reality-TV show. Reportedly, many of those afflicted have specifically mentioned the film while in therapy. More recently, on Sept. 16, 2013, the detailed account of one Ohio student who suffered for years from the Truman Show delusion is documented in the New Yorker magazine article, “Unreality Star”, by Andrew Marantz.
